60th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of COPUOS

EUTELSAT IGO is a permanent Observer of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and, in this capacity, is currently following the discussions taking place in Vienna during the
60th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee.

Topics include interalia near-Earth objects, space weather, the use of space technology for socioeconomic development or for disaster management support, developments in global navigation satellite systems and long-term sustainability of outer space activities (LTS).

Members States of the working group on LTS are considering new guidelines and developing recommendations. The LTS group is also preparing the conditions of a workshop to be organised in 2024 and which will provide opportunities for new entities to exchange with current members under the aegis of the STSC.

The STSC Member States also welcomed the enhanced cooperation between COPUOS and the ITU to jointly raise awareness on the benefits of outer space in science and technology, in line with the Space 2030 sustainable development agenda.

STSC is also considering issues related to the deployment of satellites constellations in low earth orbit and its impact for the space ecosystem and the space community at large. As such the important topic on “Protection of Dark and Quiet Skies for science and society” is examined.

The STSC also welcomed a Symposium on “Space Observation Contributions Supporting Climate Action” organised by COSPAR (Committee on Space Research) presenting Earth observation missions applied to sea ice monitoring, water management and climate-induced hazards. These presentations featured the importance of space-based technologies in monitoring and understanding climate change.
