The Executive Secretary attended this week the ITU Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) that was held in Kampala (Uganda). The GSR is the annual gathering of the global ICT regulatory community bringing together policymakers, Heads of regulatory authorities, industry executives and academics with a view to exchange best practices in the regulation of digital technologies and to define innovative regulation responses.
Key topics of this year’s GSR edition included how to regulate artificial intelligence and robotics, how to establish best development financing models, and how to address climate change challenges. With the expansion of satellite networks resulting in new space-based applications, participants also considered various regulatory measures and approaches for a sustainable space economy.
Piotr Dmochowski-Lipski, the Executive Secretary of EUTELSAT IGO, said: “Satellite telecommunications is an important element within the overall telecom mix. Modern multi-orbit solutions, increased convergence with terrestrial technologies and sustainability standards are clearly in the spotlight of the GSR-24. Our common goals are to reduce and ultimately eliminate the digital divide and to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals”.
During the meeting, the ICT regulators adopted the GSR-24 Best Practice Guidelines, that include a series of consideration for balancing innovation with regulation to create a positive impact on societies and economies.
